If this can’t make Pakistan think tank wake up from their slumber, nothing will. If this can’t make PCB realize that Cricket has changed, nothing will.
The era of dead-blocking is long over. Forget the top sides, look at this number 9 ranked Bangladeshi side and look, at the fall of every wicket, how they made sure they don’t get bogged down. While trying to build partnerships they kept on picking the odd deliveries to pick up the odd boundary to release the pressure.
You simply can’t fill your line up with Azhar, Haris, Fawad, Asad and Saad, all good-for-repair-job players, and expect to win matches. Its no rocket science to understand that for these gentlemen to perform to their potential, someone has to fail first. So overloading the team with such players is nothing but planning for failure and eventually making the failure a regularity, if not, certainty.
Its not the age of picking technically sedate players and teaching them how to make big hits. The World Cricket has already adopted a completely opposite strategy to it, that is, to pick impact players and teaching them how to play long innings. Every team is filled mostly with such players with at most two of the more conventional players to hold the innings together. But for Pakistan, it has been the other way round and finally, with the exclusion of a couple of impact players, the team is finding itself in a big hole. While other teams are busy preparing themselves to cash in every little chance and to knock their opponents out in couple of overs, Pakistan think tank is still busy sharpening the strategy of taking the fight to another ‘5 overs’ and trying to build fortresses to hide their fear of failure. Unless PCB gets over that defeatist mindset, they simply can’t field a side good enough to represent a country full of passionate, aggressive and over-zealous Cricket fans.
Though, this adjustment has been due for quite a while, its never too late for any correction as long as one has the will and desire to correct and improve itself. Does PCB have that kind of desire left in them or they are happy to slide into the state of next minnow of the Cricket World? Nobody knows.
